Allow them an hour to play and explore outside their cage. You should remove any reachable wires and houseplants. They may squeeze through tiny nooks and gaps, so be sure to cover these.
If rats have been handled properly since birth, they will not detest human contact. Avoid picking them up by the tail or by the scruff as it is painful and uncomfortable for them. Instead, use your hands to gently scoop them up from below their chest. Children should be taught and supervised when handling rats.
